Bernie

Bernie is proudly owned by Jason and has been part of the J. Smegal Contracting crew since the day he realized roofs come with two things he loves: heights to worry about and crew lunches to supervise.

As our Head of Paw-licy & Leak Protection, Bernie specializes in spotting potential roof issues—mainly by staring intensely at shingles from the ground and barking at anything that “looks off.” His signature move is the Bernie Sniff Test, which has a 100% success rate of identifying treats but a somewhat lower success rate for actual leaks.

Throughout the day, Bernie patrols the office to ensure the team is following proper roofing protocol: no crumbs left on desks, all petting quotas met, and absolutely no squirrels allowed on company property.

Although he’ll happily accept affection from anyone, Bernie has made it clear that Dona is his favorite office mate. He follows her around like a furry shadow, supervises her paperwork, and sits at her feet during important meetings—just in case roof-related decisions require canine input.

When he’s not boosting morale or keeping a watchful eye on the shop, Bernie can be found curled up under Jason’s desk, dreaming of perfectly installed roofs, leak-free homes, and the occasional extra slice of bacon.
